Ok thanks, so what kind of links can we add in references as i have seen that all the articles on wikihow have many reference site links added. How do you judge that any specific link is natural or not or if its for content promotion only. What are the guidelines for adding references. I would like to know more about that because the links which i had added earlier were natural and relevant, by intention was not content promotion but just that the source from where we referenced the content must get the credit due, which is the sole purpose of adding references according to me. I dont want to promote any specific link or website but just that the credit must be given to those where the content was sourced from.

eg have a look at this article http://bit.ly/2WcYjBc it contains 20 references and its a balant content promotion i would say. in the references http://bit.ly/2GXLtlh is mentioned 2 times and another website is added 3 times, and its hardcore content promotion by them. Should i edit that and remove those too? its a classic example of content promotion and same is true for all other articles.... Basically, what i want to understand is that according to you what is the motive of references ? How to do categorize them and judge if its promotional or not. Why i cant add references whereas all others can? That my point please.
