DIY Coffin Enclosure Instructions-Tanner Bateman
Introduction: Custom Enclosure
Have you ever had the desire to own an exotic animal as a pet such as a lizard, tarantula, or frog? Well if so, instead of buying a generic enclosure why not build your own? With these easy to follow instructions you can craft your very own coffin shaped enclosure. With a few steps allowing you to add your own unique modification to the design.

Step One: Obtaining Materials
Below is a list of materials that are required for you to complete this enclosure build.
• Cordless Drill
• Drill Bit Set, if set is not available a 7/16 drill bit will work fine or any size smaller. This will be for drilling ventilation holes
• Dremel Multitool, for any sanding down of uneven edges if pieces don’t line up correctly
• 3ft*3ft plexiglass slab, 2/16 of an inch thick
• 3ft*3ft plexiglass slab, 4/16 of an inch thick
• One tube of aquarium safe silicone
• One tube of fast setting, clear, solvent cement
• One glass cutting tool
• Ruler
• Several sheets of stencil paper, for making stencils of the pieces that will be cut out of the plexiglass. Regular paper works, just not as well during the cutting portion
• One multitool, for snapping any excess pieces that does not snap off immediately
• 3 Plastic hinges and 3 clasp locks, available on amazon
• Box cutter knife
• Tape

Step Two: Create stencils
The list below provides measurement, which slab of plexiglass it should be cut from, and the quantity of each piece that you will need. To make the stencils you may need to tape a few pieces of paper together to fit the dimensions.
2/16 Thick Slab
• 6in*7in, 2 each

These two pieces will be the bottom and lid of the enclosure. So, they will essentially be the pieces that create the coffin shape. These are by far the two most difficult pieces to construct. So, I provided an extra image to help ensure the dimensions make sense.

Step Three: Cut Pieces from Plexiglass
These pieces can be cut out in any order using the handheld glass cutting tool. I will warn you that this is a bit of work doing the cutting by hand. If you happen to find a way that work better without leaving the pieces with destroyed edges than expedite the process. From my experience the glass cutter works well and leaves a clean edge. I recommend using double sided tape to tape the stencils to the plexiglass and using a straight edge to ensure you make the proper cut every time. I also suggest utilizing the edges of the plexiglass slab to help reduce the number of cuts you need to make. Inevitably this is a pain staking process and involves a bit of work.



Step Four: Drill Ventilation Holes
This is when you can add a little of your ow style to the design if you would like. As seen in the image above I stole the punisher logo for the lid of my enclosure. And as seen below I took the grenade logo for the side panels. The only recommendation I have is that you place ventilation holes on the lid and side of the enclosure. This will allow for cross ventilation and will provide whatever animal you place inside with an abundant amount of oxygen.

Step Five: Forge the Enclosure
This process is best done over several days, allowing the silicone 24 hours to dry before connecting the next piece. This is best done using a countertop with a sharp 90-degree angle and a plate or cup pushed up against the newly applied piece. Allowing the silicone to dry with the piece at a perfect 90-degree angle. And you’re going to want to align each panel connected so it sits flush with the edge of the large bottom piece, ensuring the walls will silicone together nicely with no space between them. Each piece is also best done one at a time. Allowing for proper placement and plenty of time to sit so it won’t be easily shifted during assembly of other pieces.
• Apply a line of silicone to the bottom of the large coffin shaped piece you did not drill holes in.
• Position up against the wall you decided to utilize for the 90-degree angle
• Place bottom 6in*7in piece ensuring the 6-inch side will be the height of the enclosure and one of the 7-inch sides is being silicone to the bottom piece. Hold the piece in place while you wipe the excess silicone with your finger, making a clean, smooth look.
• Place plate or large heavy cup against the freshly silicone piece keeping it firmly in place.
• Allow 24 hours for silicone to cure.
• Repeat the first five steps with the remaining sides of the enclosure

Step Six: Install Lid of Enclosure
The placement of the hinges and locks is up to you and based on if you want the lip to open to the left or to the right. I chose to place my hinges on the left side of the enclosure and locks on the right. Allowing it to open like a book. To apply both of these a very small amount of the solvent cement can be applied to the hinge or lock and you can just hold them in place for a couple minutes and the cement will take hold. It just takes playing with the hinges and locks for a moment and you will easily see how they work and where the cement will need to be applied. Below are a couple images of the final product that you should produce. One with the enclosure empty, and one after a small tarantula was added. I hope you enjoyed following these instructions and I hope your future pet will enjoy its new home.
