These Home Decor Trends Are Popping Off Right Now, According To Etsy

After pretty much an entire year spent behind closed doors, our homes have become even more central to, well, just about everything in our lives. Home is where we sleep, socialize, try out new hobbies, work, work out... and then (attempt to) de-stress. It has been the consistent backdrop to a truly extraordinary and unpredictable year. So it makes perfect sense that, according to Etsy's Annual Home Decor guide released today, the top trends for 2021 don't just reflect this evolved relationship to our environments, but that we're paying more attention to them now than ever before.

"Homewares and home furnishings was Etsy’s top category in 2020, as shoppers looked for items — from decorative accents to statement-making furniture — to refresh their spaces," says Dayna Isom Johnson, trend expert for the creative marketplace.

And according to Etsy's comprehensive search data, which is what Johnson and her team use to make predictions about what we'll be seeing more of in 2021, people are looking to establish a more intimate relationship with their surroundings. From the cozy yet minimalist appeal of a Japandi interior aesthetic to all the fixings of a spa-like bathroom required to transform our spaces into sanctuaries, this year's trends speak to a collective desire for comfort and calm in our abodes. “As a huge proponent of self-care, [I think it's] so important to find moments of relaxation at home and I love that this trend makes it easy to do just that with simple additions like eucalyptus shower bundles or aromatherapy candles,” Johnson shares.

But it's not just the creation of sleek and soothing settings that have got the Etsy pros clicking. Certain must-have pieces such as wavy mirrors and mushroom lamps have also proven to be a wildly popular way for stay-at-home shoppers to add a quirky touch of personality to their living quarters (and, of course, their IG feeds). Ahead, we've outlined the six major trends that Johnson predicts are about to take off in living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and beyond — along with the tips and products you'll need to transform your own space accordingly.

Japandi

Incorporating elements of Japandi, a hybrid of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics, is an effective way to achieve just that. And with a 172% increase in searches for Japanese decor and a 55% increase in searches for Scandinavian decor, Johnson predicts this trend will only continue to rise.

Pro tip: "Japandi fuses modern minimalist and warm rustic styles, bringing both tranquility and comfort to any space. To get the look, try pairing warm shades of wood with contrasting neutral colors," Johnson advises.

Travertine

For anyone that loves incorporating marble in their living environments, travertine is a word you should expect to hear more of throughout 2021. The sustainable, time-honored material from the '80s is back and showing up as the “new” neutral in homes with searches up 211% for travertine items.

Pro tip: Statement surfaces are among the most popular ways in which Etsy users are adopting this trend, Johnson says. "Shoppers are especially looking for travertine tables — both vintage and handmade — with searches up 361% on Etsy. "

Waves, Squiggles & Curves

If you spend a lot of time on Instagram, you may have noticed a groovy shape that's (quite literally) making waves in people's abodes: squiggly, curvy decor items everywhere from the bedroom to the bathroom and beyond. These smoothed-out zig-zag motifs are seriously trending right now, and Etsy shoppers are on top of it. Johnson reports that there’s been an extraordinary 28,236% increase in searches for wavy candles and a 5,296% increase in searches for wavy mirrors.

Pro tip: "The trend can be incorporated into decor as subtly as in a mug handle or as statement-making as in a floor-length mirror," she says.

Stay-At-Home Sanctuaries

Shoppers are turning to their bathrooms to take refuge by creating a soothing, stress-free, spa-like atmosphere. "We’ve seen a 7,466% increase in searches for eucalyptus shower bundles, a 212% increase in searches for bath caddies, and a 120% increase in searches for waffle towels," Johnson explains.

Pro tip: According to Johnson, greenery (real or fake) can help take your at-home sanctuary to the next level: "We’re calling olive trees the new 'it' plant — we’ve already seen a 269% increase in searches for olive trees and an 896% increase in searches for faux olive trees. Move over, fiddle leaf fig trees!"

Checkered Prints

Blame it on The Queen's Gambit or on the lockdown board game boom, but checkerboard prints are here to stay for a minute. On Etsy, searches for items featuring this playful print within the home and living category have jumped 889%.

Pro tip: This must-have pattern — Johnson calls it "gingham’s modern cousin" — is super versatile and can be incorporated into home design in a variety of color combinations. Think checkered print rugs (up 1,0004% in search), pillows and poufs (up 327%), and blankets, quilts, and bedding (up 182%).

Mushroom Motifs

We already had our eyes on the crop of mushroom pieces popping up across closets and accessories collections, so the fact that the motif has swiftly made its way into the realms of wellness and interior design as well comes as no surprise.

Pro tip: "This retro trend is coming back with a modern twist, Johnson says. "Mushroom lamps, a recent social media darling, are taking off: there has been a 371% increase in searches f[or them]. We’ve also seen a whopping 902% increase in searches for mushroom pillows and pillowcases."
