In the past few years,
oat milk has gone from
a dairy-free milk trend to
a plant-based ingredient mainstay . It's no longer something you'll find in only the coolest coffee shops. It's made its way into home refrigerators around the country and all kinds of sweet treats, including ice creams.
Big
non-dairy brands like
Oatly ,
Planet Oat , and
So Delicious have launched oat milk-based frozen desserts, but they're not the only ones. Small companies and even
independent ice cream shops are beginning to offer their own take on oat milk ice cream. Ahead, find out where and how to get oat milk ice cream by the scoop, bar, and pint from these smaller-scale spots.
Whipped - Urban Dessert Lab
Whipped - Urban Dessert Lab is the world's first oat-milk soft-serve shop. The New York-based women- and Black-owned shop was first launched because the founders saw a need in their community and beyond. "75% of African-Americans are lactose intolerant and around 32 million Americans have food allergies," the Whipped Team shared with Refinery29. "Furthermore, the creamy texture associated with dairy ice cream tends to go missing when you cross over to non-dairy ice cream. In addition, the non-dairy ice creams that are more creamy-like are created using nuts/tree nuts (almond, cashew, coconut), and these cannot be enjoyed by people with nut allergies."
Whipped - Urban Dessert Lab's oat milk soft-serve base is dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and coconut-free. In addition to the soft serve, the spot offers high-quality toppings and sauces for an authentic ice cream shop experience.

Bi-Rite Creamery
The Bi-Rite Family of Businesses in San Francisco is owned and operated by chef Sam Mogannam and includes two markets, a creamery and solar-powered ice cream truck, a full-service catering operation, a three-acre Sonoma farm, and a cafe. The Bi-Rite Creamery is, of course, where our interest lies for this piece.
Mogannan and his brother Raphael took over the grocery store from their family in 1997 and began selling prepared foods using locally grown produce. In 2002, pastry chefs Anne Walker and Kris Hoogerhyde started baking sweets and selling them through Bi-Rite Market. Then, in 2006, Bi-Rite Creamery opened with Walker and Hoogerhyde at the helm.
The creamery offers small-batch ice cream and handmade baked goods, and included on its menu is oat milk ice cream. Hoogerhyde was inspired to create the creamery's new Cinnamon Maple Oat Crunch oat milk ice cream flavor by her son's love for cinnamon oatmeal.
Flavors: Cinnamon Maple Oat Crunch, Chai Latte (made with both oat milk and almond milk)

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream has been beloved by New Yorkers since 2008 when the brand launched from its yellow truck. Now, it has over 25 locations and trucks in New York, Los Angeles, and New Jersey and is available in select grocery stores. Since Van Leeuwen is known for making delicious vegan ice cream that even dairy lovers can't get enough of, it will come as no surprise that the brand offers a selection of oat milk ice cream.
"We've been making our cashew-based vegan ice cream for seven years, and with the rise in popularity of oat milk, we were inspired to make another awesome vegan ice cream using house-made oat milk in place of cashew," Laura O’Neill, co-founder of Van Leeuwen tells Refinery29. "The oats create a super creamy base, are even more environmentally sustainable, and work well with all the flavors we make. We are currently making seven oat milk flavors and often feature an oat flavor in our monthly specials line up."
Flavors: Vegan Oat Caramelized Banana Praline, Vegan Chocolate Oat Milk Cookie Dough Chunk, Vegan Oat Milk Brown Sugar Chunk, Vegan Oat Milk Caramel Cookie, Vegan Oat Milk Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl, Vegan Oat Milk Brownie Sundae Raspberry Swirl, Vegan Oat Milk Strawberry, Vegan Oat Milk Mocha Latte

Chloe's
Chloe's is a frozen fruit pops brand founded by Chloe Epstein, a mom of three and former Assistant District Attorney. Chloe's has a storefront in New York City and sells its products at select grocery stores. In addition to its vegan Fruit Pops and Dipped Pops, the brand now offers Oat Milk Pops.
According to Epstein, the brand started looking into using oat milk in its pops when the ingredient began getting buzz back in 2017. "Chloe's was looking to delve deeper into decadence (beyond our dark chocolate dipped pop line) and we believed that oat milk was the perfect way to achieve the best non-dairy, creamy experience," Epstein tells Refinery29. The founder and her team liked that oat milk has a neutral taste that doesn't overwhelm other ingredients and is environmentally friendly because it requires less water and herbicides than other non-dairy milk bases.
"After much time and tasting, we were able to launch the FIRST oat milk-based pop in three irresistible varieties," she shares. "Our Oatmilk Pops allow us to offer a more indulgent option while remaining true to our core value of using simple ingredients."
Flavors: Mint Chip Oatmilk, Salted Caramel Oatmilk, Raspberry Chip Oatmilk
