How To Spring Clean Your Skin-Care Routine In 5 Easy Steps

The same way you spring clean your closet, the same attention should be paid to your seasonal skin-care lineup. Sure, browsing online for a new SPF might not be as sexy as splurging on a crisp new white blouse from Shopbop, but it is important.

New York City-based dermatologists Hadley King, MD, and Joshua Zeichner, MD, tell us it's essential to refresh your product routine heading into May because as the weather changes, so do your skin's needs. Ahead, find out exactly how to tackle spring cleaning your bathroom — and which shiny, new, low-key sexy sunscreens and moisturizers you should pop inside your medicine cabinet ASAP.

Lighten Up Your Cleanser

Now might be a good time to switch your oil or cream cleanser for a lighter foam or gel formula. Dr. King highly recommends NakedPoppy Refresh Foaming Cleanser, which not only looks chic but contains tons of good-for-your-skin ingredients, including lactic acid and quinoa extract. "It's a perfect do-it-all combination for spring," she says. "It gently exfoliates, soothes, moisturizes, and brightens."

Switch To A Brightening Moisturizer

Similarly, you'll want to consider a moisturizer with a lower molecular weight to the one you used during the drier winter months. "Warmer weather does not mean you don't need a moisturizer," says Dr. Zeichner, "but you should look for something lighter. I really like InnBeauty Project Next Level Moisturizer, which contains niacinamide to prevent moisture loss and soothing botanicals to brighten the skin."

Wear Sunscreen With Antioxidants

Of course, you want to wear sunscreen every day no matter the season, but it's especially important when you're spending extra time outside. More than just any SPF 30, Dr. King says to look for a lightweight sunscreen formulated with antioxidants. "Mele Dew The Most Sunscreen is sheer, so it won't clog your pores, and it contains vitamin E and other moisturizing ingredients, as well as niacinamide, which improves skin tone and texture," she explains.

Use Your Retinol At Night

According to the pros, you can continue to use retinol, even in warmer months. However, because the ingredient can make your skin more sensitive to UV damage, Dr. King recommends only using it at night, specifically in a cream form. "Pond's Rejuveness Advanced Hydrating Night Cream is a great option for moisturizing while also delivering anti-aging benefits," she says. "It's formulated with vitamin B3 and retinol complex as well as glycerin and pro-ceramides to hydrate and support the skin barrier."

Grab An Oil-Absorbing Mask

If you start carrying blotting papers when the temperature gets above 60 degrees, you probably have oily skin, and should consider mixing in a clay mask once or twice a week in the spring and summer. Dr. King recommends Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Pink Clay Face Mask. "It contains a combination of kaolin and bentonite clays to absorb oil, as well as calamine to soothe the skin and prevent any dryness or irritation," she says. Plus, it's adorably petal-pink and just $7.
