5 Viral Beauty Hacks That Actually Work

If you’re into beauty, odds are your social feeds are filled with liquid eyeliner tricks, heatless curl tutorials, and product recs for glowing skin. And since some of these beauty hacks are a little out-there — or even straight-up dangerous (we’re looking at you, sunscreen contouring) —  we scoured the apps for the truly genius ideas that are actually worth your time.

Plus, every product you’ll need can be found right at your local CVS, which has partnered with Venmo and PayPal to create the ultimate shopping hack: When you use the QR code in the PayPal or Venmo app to buy your products, you’ll get $10 cash back on your first in-store purchase. So it’s basically like you’re getting paid to recreate these beauty techniques. Here’s how to try your hand at these viral beauty hacks, ahead.

Foolproof Smoky Eye

Creating the perfect smoky eye boils down to shadow placement and how well you blend. But figuring out which shadow to apply where (crease? lashline? lid?) can be tough. The only color theory you need to understand in order to nail this smoky eye trick is swiping on your shadows from darkest to lightest. Choose five shades from a nude palette, like Rimmel Magnif'eyes Eyeshadow Palette in Nude, and apply them in even stripes across your lids, starting with the darkest at the outer corner and lightening up as you move inward. Then, buff the shadows with a fluffy brush to create a seamless gradient.

Wet-Hair Brush Styling

Typically, if you’re trying to add definition to natural waves and curls, you should steer clear of brushing your hair — but this hack proves that a brush can actually be a helpful tool. When your hair is still damp, create small sections (about one-inch each) and smooth each piece with a brush, like the Beauty 360 Easy Hold All Purpose Brush. Once you’ve reached the end of the section, turn the brush toward your face and wind the length of your hair around the handle of the brush. Curl it up to the root before gently unwinding it. You’ll be left with a spiral that you can scrunch for added bounce. Do this for your whole head to reveal beautiful, defined texture.

Yellow Eyeshadow Ombré Lip Trick

Good news: ombré lips are back. And as wild as it sounds, the secret to getting them right is using yellow eyeshadow. First, create a base with a layer of concealer all over your lips before applying a yellow shadow, like this bright option from the Wet n Wild PAC-MAN Game Over Color Palette. Follow it up with a red lipstick on just the inner half of each lip. Finish with a sheer pink gloss to blend the two shades, creating that plumped, just-ate-a-cherry-popsicle effect.

The Do-Everything Tool

It’s easy enough to apply one color all over your lid and call it a day, but some of the more advanced eyeshadow techniques take some practice. But there’s a useful eyeshadow-perfecting tool that you likely already have in your arsenal: an eyelash curler. Since it’s already designed to fit your lashline, you can use a curler (like the Tweezerman Classic Eyelash Curler) to help you create a flawless cut-crease shape. Just hold the curler right above your eye’s natural crease and blend shadow overtop. You can also use the tool to help create a precise cat eye flick, a defined brow arch, and (of course) to curl your lashes.

DIY Cream Blush

Creating a cream blush by blending foundation and lipstick is a classic backstage makeup artist secret. Customize the perfect color by using a dot of your foundation and a swipe of your favorite liquid lipstick. (We're currently obsessed with Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor, Velvety Matte Liquid Lipstick in Obsession.) Mix the two together on the back of your hand to concoct a natural-looking creamy blush that you can dab onto your cheeks for a rosy flush. Use the same lipstick on your lips to create a subtle, monochromatic look.
