There’s a life-changing African proverb that goes, “If you educate a man, you educate the individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” Educated women invest time, money, and resources into their families — as well as their communities. And when one woman is empowered with the right tools, the ripple effect is felt for generations.
According to UNESCO, however, 76 million women around the world can neither read nor write. And America’s achievement gap isn’t helping, either: The national reading assessment shows that by the 12th grade, white vs. Black students have a noticeable 32% gap in achievement.
That is why Lancôme has entered the national conversation. The luxury beauty brand is committed to addressing inequity in education by funding critical programs in the U.S. (and the world). In 2017, Lancôme created the Write Her Future (with CARE) program to give young women much-needed access to literacy, mentorship, and entrepreneurship opportunities. To date, the philanthropic effort has reached more than 23,000 women in 13 countries, including the U.S., Morocco, Brazil, Germany, and Italy.
And now, Lancôme has partnered with advocacy powerhouse NAACP to support young women of color in the U.S. on their educational journey by providing mentorships, workshops, and scholarships to college-bound high school seniors. Lancôme believes every young woman deserves the opportunity to write her future — learn more about how Lancôme is a crucial part of her next chapter here.
