20 Fragrances For When You Just Want To Smell Clean

Social media fads have spawned one aesthetic after another. The e-girls of 2019 morphed into fairycore, which eventually blended into cottagecore, which has taken a long-winding road to a current It vibe that feels like a breath of fresh air: the clean-girl aesthetic.

If you're a certified Clean Girl, chances are perfume is not at the top of your list of priorities. Yes, you still want to smell good (don't we all?), but you're probably not one to curate a fragrance wardrobe for every mood or gravitate toward heady, over-the-top scents. Crisp, skin-like scents (think light, airy, and shower fresh) and floral fragrances, on the other hand, are likely more your speed.

When we say “clean,” we're not talking about your apartment after you’ve scoured it with Pine-Sol. “That’s a more industrial, deodorant clean and, even if you like the scent, there’s a utilitarian quality that will never be truly beautiful,” says fragrance expert Chandler Burr. The clean we’re talking about is more conceptual. “It’s pure luminescence, or light turned somehow into scent,” he says. “New materials, including some terrific fragrance molecules, have allowed scent artists to create them.”

But what is it that makes "clean" scents so appealing? (Other than the fact that we can get away with washing our hair less when wearing them.) “Clean scents allow women to communicate themselves in a sharper, more clearly defined way than classical fragrances,” says Burr. “They let us speak much more in our own voices.” Intrigued? Ellis Brooklyn Myth Eau De Parfum

Forget what you know about heady, seductive musks. This take on the classic note weaves in components better associated with sweetness and light, like white orchid, jasmine petals, and pink lotus, over an earthy base of patchouli, white cedarwood, and liquid musks. This gives it an airiness that smells like your skin, but better.

Ellis Brooklyn Myth Eau De Parfum, $, available at Revolve

Henry Rose Jake's House Eau de Parfum

Henry Rose's array of clean, sustainably made scents are all one of a kind in their own right, but I have a particular soft spot for Jake's House. Aquatic (but not beachy) vibes meet a splash of neroli and peony for a deeply nostalgic yet unexpected scent.

Henry Rose Jake's House Eau de Parfum, $, available at Credo

Skylar Sun Shower

Skylar's unique take on fresh fragrances juxtaposes bright top notes of bergamot, jasmine tea, and lemon leaves with woody base notes of cedar, cypress, and palo santo. The result: Not your average summer scent.

Skylar Sun Shower, $, available at Skylar

Chanel N°19 Eau De Toilette Spray

Think of this Chanel fragrance as body mist all grown-up. It's the olfactory embodiment of the color green, brimming with fresh, woody notes of galbanum and iris.

Chanel N°19 Eau De Toilette Spray, $, available at Chanel

By Rosie Jane Angie Perfume

Described as "a love letter to Los Angeles," this breezy floral smells nothing like car exhaust or broken dreams. Rather, it's as fresh and clean as a fragrance can get, predominantly jasmine and fig with a touch of understated sweetness from honeysuckle. The formulation is also clean, insofar as it's paraben-, phthalate-, and cruelty-free, and the packaging is 100% recyclable.

Diptyque Philosykos Eau de Toilette

This unique scent mixes fig leaves and black pepper to create a day-appropriate take on a subtly spicy scent.

Diptyque Philosykos Eau de Toilette, $, available at Nordstrom

Chloé Love Story Eau de Toilette

This orange blossom scent spritzes on light and crisp in the morning, then fades to a subtle floral accord by evening. The fresh aroma lingers but never overpowers.

Chloé Love Story Eau de Toilette, $, available at Sephora

Maison Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning

Imagine lounging in freshly laundered, 800-thread-count sheets, as the sun glints through your floor-length linen curtains. From your balcony, you feel a soft breeze ruffle a lush garden of white flowers below. Sounds dramatically poetic, but it's exactly what this cocktail of lily of the valley, white musk, patchouli oil, and aldehyde smells like.

Maison Margiela REPLICA Lazy Sunday Morning, $, available at Sephora

Le Labo Bergamote 22 Eau de Parfum

No matter how many hours you spend holed up in the corner of a cigarette-infused dive bar, this elixir of 22 notes — among them earthy petitgrain, bitter grapefruit, warm amber, and verdant vetiver — can make you smell spa-day fresh.

Le Labo Bergamote 22 Eau de Parfum, $, available at Nordstrom

Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil Eau de Toilette

Rumor has it this scent was inspired by a walk near the Aswan Dam on the Nile, which is spotted with garden islands. (Sounds nice, right?) The blend of green mango and lotus smells pleasantly exotic and sparkly — not fruity or overly sweet — and a hint of sycamore wood brings it down to earth.

Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil Eau de Toilette, $, available at Sephora

Byredo Blanche Eau de Parfum

For this now-iconic Byredo scent, creator Ben Gorham attempted to evoke the purity of white using white rose, light woods, and aldehyde. The result is sharp, pure, wearable — and one of our favorites, ever.

Byredo Blanche Eau de Parfum, $, available at Nordstrom

Clean Classic Warm Cotton

The top-note trifecta of bergamot, peony, and amber could leave you smelling like a Yankee Candle store. However, sheer musk and invigorating verbena anchor the blend for a crisp yet warm finish.

Clean Classic - Warm Cotton, $, available at Sephora

Philosophy Pure Grace Eau de Toilette

Lily of the valley, frosty musk, and leafy green team up for a simple, soap-and-water scent. If, that is, the soap were handmade in the French countryside and the water were plunged from an icy, babbling brook.

Philosophy Pure Grace Eau de Toilette, $, available at Ulta Beauty

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau de Toilette

This cult classic scent has thousands of reviews online — and rightfully so. We like to think the combination of apple, bamboo, and cedarwood smells like fresh ocean waves.

DOLCE&GABBANA Light Blue Eau de Toilette, $, available at Ulta Beauty

Korres Eau de Toilette

Fresh florals are our favorite year-round fragrance, and this one is mighty powerful. Sweet freesia meets bergamot for the perfect medium between sexy and sweet.

Korres Eau de Toilette, $, available at Revolve

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Acqua Eau de Toilette

A light, fresh, subtly citrus scent in a clear blue bottle that's the exact color you'd imagine the waves in Santorini to look like. It's the 1%'s kind of clean.

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Acqua Eau de Toilette, $, available at Ulta Beauty

Jo Loves Pomelo

Whenever you need a summer pick-me-up in the dead of winter, this fresh blend of rose and pink pomelo should be your first stop. Even if you've never been to Newport, this fragrance would have everyone else believe that you belong there.

Jo Loves Pomelo, $, available at Net-A-Porter

Fresh Life Eau de Parfum

The kind of fresh-air fragrance New Yorkers will crave after a decade of living in the city. The subtle moss, bergamot, vanilla grass, and cypress leave you smelling a lot cleaner than it, too.

Fresh Fresh Life Eau de Parfum, $, available at Neiman Marcus

Aerin Waterlily Sun

If Monet had a fragrance of choice, it'd most likely be this — or, at least we'd hope so. Considering this perfume is inspired by the waterlilies in the gardens of Giverny, France, the Sicilian bergamot, dewy greens, waterlily, and jasmine sambac practically capture the essence of the natural sunlight in a small, rural village.

Aerin Waterlily Sun, $, available at Sephora

Nova Green Musk

When we hear "musk," we don't usually think "lightweight." But this one pairs the heady note with hints of fig, grass, and amber. The result: fresh rain on a spring day.

Nova Green Musk, $, available at Nova Perfume
If you like tropical vacations to Tahiti (and who doesn't), you'll love this roll-on oil. The blend of coconut oil, tiare flower, and vanilla has a clean, complex richness to it that smells like sun-warmed skin on a gorgeous island day.

MCMC Monoi Perfume Oil, $, available at MCMC
Even though this scent is inspired by a ghost story, there's nothing scary about its herbal top notes.

Viktor & Rolf Magic Sage Spell, $, available at Sephora
This fragrance toes the line between fresh and spicy, thanks to notes of bitter orange, cardamom, violet leaves, patchouli moss, and musk.

Atelier Cologne Trèfle Pur Cologne Absolue, $, available at Sephora
If you were ever so lucky as to skip along the Champs-Élysées on the first barelegged day of spring, stopping to nuzzle fresh herbs (tarragon) and citrus blossoms (lime and bergamot), then you already have this scent committed to memory.

Jo Malone London French Lime Blossom Cologne, $, available at Nordstrom
Bergamot, precious woods, and white musks are what (private island) memories are made of — at least, that's what perfumeur Albert Fouguet says.

Eight & Bob Memoires de Mustique, $, available at Sephora
Imagine strolling through Paris' Tuileries Gardens on the first day of spring. There's a colony of rose bushes surrounding you on all sides and, without warning, you get a whiff of vetiver and sandalwood that's so faint and clean you'll want to go back for more. That's what you get, minus a passport stamp, with this scent.

Maison Margiela Replica Promenade in the Gardens Fragrance, $, available at Nordstrom
While sunrises and dewdrops don’t have a fragrance, per se, but they do have a feeling. In this bottle, it's evoked by clover leaf, green tea, and spearmint. “It’s a work so beautiful, it brings tears to your eyes,” gushes Burr.

Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca, $, available at Nordstrom
