12 Autumn Nail Trends We’re Loving Right Now

Summer's nail art trends were gallery-worthy to say the least.

The mesmerizing French swirl took over from the classic French tip, while glossy croc print replaced tortoiseshell, and unassuming shades, like sepia and bottle green gained all the street cred. But fall is right around the corner and with the (much-anticipated) cooler weather come myriad nail looks guaranteed to spark new obsessions.

Ahead, we ask a handful of the hottest nail artists to spill the trends which are slowly but surely taking over salons everywhere.

Whether you want to go all out or prefer to stay a little more understated, there's something here for you.

Glass Nails

R29 beauty editor Megan Decker recently visited New York's Vanity Projects salon to try the soon-to-be-trending 'glass' manicure. The foil mosaic design is thought to have originated in Korea. Nail artist Park Eunkyung recently shared glass nail art and it swifty inspired other artists to consider different variations on the look. According to Pinterest data analytics, the search for 'glass manicure' is up 170%. Decker's review: 10/10; "I love how delicate they are — I can't tell you how many compliments I've gotten."

Gold Drip Tips

Gold dripping tips has been one of nail artist Alexandra Teleki's most requested trends. "It's because of the simplicity — and the uniqueness," says Alexandra, who believes a touch of gold atop a modern, nude manicure is perfect for all settings and occasions. This one requires a steady hand if you're attempting it yourself but a qualified manicurist will nail it (excuse the pun) in one go.

'90s Grunge Nails

This trend takes inspiration from the dark brown shades of lip liner (think MAC's lip pencil in Chestnut and Spice) and glossy brown lids worn throughout the '90s. "I love deep chocolate and camel-colored browns for Autumn-Winter 2022," says session manicurist Ami Streets. "The tones look edgy yet chic and are softer than using a jet-black polish."

If you're not keen on block color, Ami says sepia-esque shades like these are a great way to replace the classic white French tip, which has become a perennial favorite. Try Dior Vernis Nail Lacquer in Unapologetic, or Essie Gel Couture Nail Polish in All Checked Out, and look to @nailsl0 on Instagram.

Molten Metal Nails

Chrome is back in all its glory, says award-winning nail artist and technician Metta Francis, so we can expect to see lots of molten metal looks, like these nails fashioned by Ami. "I predict the mixing and matching of silver and gold," adds Metta. "Think chromatic tips, 3D effects, like metal bullions, full-on metallic, and minimalistic designs on a natural base."

Italian Tips

You've heard of the Italian manicure: leaving a teeny-tiny gap between each side of the nail and the polish to give the illusion of longer nail beds. Now, let us introduce you to the Italian tip. This follows the same rule, omitting polish from each side of the nail at the tip. As a result, the nail appears elongated and slender rather than wide, which can be the case with the usual French tip.

"My favorite manicure is the Italian-style tips combined with swirls to make a set of mismatched nails," says Alexandra. "Start out with a light, creamy color," she advises, "like Essie Ballet Slippers Nail Polish. Then pick up a beige, such as Green Manucurist Nail Polish in Shell Beige, and a desired third color [this is up to you] for the perfect set of autumnal nails."

Metallic Azure

"Statement blue shades look super chic and are bang on trend this season," says Ami. Pastels are a little too summery, though. "Instead, choose a metallic polish worn with a square-shape tip for an even bolder look, which gives a nod to the '90s trend revival."

Coffee Cup Nails

For an everyday classic look, coffee shades (think creamy oat milk latte through to rich espresso) will be a big winner, says Metta. We love these gradient nails by nail design expert @anouknailedit on Instagram. Metta thinks shades like these look best on a soft, short, squoval nail. "For a chic extra, minimal nail art like a simple dot in a contrasting shade will be huge."

Try Essie ExprEssie Quick Dry Nail Polish in 70 Cold Brew Crew, or Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Polish in 140 Haute Stone, if you prefer your coffee strong.

Aura Nails

Let everyone know you bring good vibes by wearing your aura on your nails. This set by @1.800.nailme on Instagram combines the brooding, autumnal shades of khaki, dark blue, and burnt orange, which all three nail artists we spoke to predict will reign supreme over pretty pastels. Super intricate, this one is best left to the professionals.

Reverse Ombre French Nails

Not for the time-poor, reverse ombre French nails requires one swipe of pastel polish followed by a coat of glitter polish. The tips are created separately, repeating the same steps and topping off with a high-shine top coat to create a cool contrast. @heygreatnails on Instagram does it so well.

Cargo Nails

This takes a cue from the cargo revival, led by models and influencers alike, says Ami. "I've noticed that the fashion set are loving all things khaki as we head into autumn." This muted green looks great as a block color or incorporated into tips, abstract swirls, and negative space shapes, she adds. We love these nails by @lolo.nailedit. "It's such a great neutral color and will be sure to go with your autumn and winter wardrobe," says Ami.

Try Nailberry Oxygenated Nail Lacquer in Love You Very Matcha, OPI Olive For Green Infinite Shine Nail Polish, or Essie ExprEssie Quick Dry Formula Chip Resistant Nail Polish in 320 Precious Cargo-Go.

Glazed French Nails

Slicking nails with pearlescent polish so that they resemble the icing on a glazed doughnut is all the rage, thanks to trendsetter Hailey Bieber. But if glazed-doughnut nails seem a bit too shimmery for your liking, opt for the glazed French: one quick swipe of iridescent polish over a French manicure with white tips.

Look to these nails by @_aurora.nail on Instagram, and try Essie ExprEssie Quick Dry Nail Polish in Iced Out Glazed Donuts.

Nail-Art Sandwich

Mixing up the full color manicure by doing some simple nail art on two fingers (ideally your index and ring finger) has been well loved throughout the year, says Alexandra, but switching it up with deeper shades is perfect for autumn. The rest of the nails are dressed entirely in the same shade as the nail art for a look that occupies a cozy space between classic and modern.
